The dummies’ guide to word of the year

First off, I want to say you are no dummy…I just always loved the dummies’ guide books;) Have you heard about the word of the year? This is where you pick a word to focus on for an entire year. I first learned about this years ago within the scrapbooking community. Ali Edwards hosts a project called One Little Word. Over the years I have seen this grow into other creative communities, including photographers. Your word can be centered around a challenge you want to overcome, something you are passionate about or something that you want more of in your life (actually it can be anything meaningful to you, it’s your word). As I was working on some goal setting this year, I worked my way through Lara Casey’s Powersheets. Part of the prep work includes writing down things that work, things that don’t work, ranking areas of your life,¬†writing down what you are grateful for, etc. Another part of the work is to choose a word. When I got through the steps, I had several words that stood out to me. The first thing I did with my words was look up the definition of each word. My 4 words that I started with were:

Intentional – (1) done with intention or on purpose; intended (2) of or relating to intention or purpose

Shine – (1) to give forth or glow with light (2) to be bright with reflected light; glisten; sparkle

Light – (1) something that makes things visible or affords illumination (2) a person who is an outstanding leader (3) a gleam or sparkle (4) mental insight, understanding

Surrender – to yield to the possession or power of another

Sidenote: I love it that multiple words have the word sparkle in the definition. For those of you who know me, know that I love all things with sparkle!

My word of the year is intentional. I want to be intentional with my relationship with God, intentional with my family and intentional at serving my clients at Pixel Chicks Photography.

One of the cool things that I love about picking a word of the year is getting some cool swag to keep my word in front of me. This year I chose a bracelet from myintent.org.

Be sure to check out some of these stores that have really cool pieces for you to display your word. All of these places create custom pieces.

Did you pick out a word of the year? If so, I would love for you to share it in the comments!
